Pure black is rare in polished designs. Near-blacks with a hint of blue, green or brown feel richer and are easier to read for long texts.

Using black in web design

  • Use near-black (for example #111827) for body text instead of #000000 to reduce glare.
  • For dark mode, start from a dark gray around #121212 to #1E293B rather than pure black, so shadows and layers remain visible.
  • Black and one bright accent color make a bold, high-contrast style for portfolios and landing pages.
